kade trent. the darkest hour never comes in the night. ___________________________________
-----Kade had thought that he would be glad to be off of work. When he had been working, that was all he had ever seemed to want. More days off, more time to do things that he wanted to do instead of slaving away in those damn coal mines where the mean all worked like dogs. He had hated working the shift where he had only every third Saturday off, and had liked switching over to 4/10’s where he got three days out of the week off. More time for him, more time to spend with his family and friends. There was nothing wrong with that at all. He always looked forward to vacations that he got, and afterward dreaded going back to work, like any other normal person would. So, when this whole explosion thing had happened, and the mine had been shut down, Kade had thought that taking leave while the law suits were being settled sounded like one hell of an idea. He could sleep in late, and not have to worry about the forty minute drive to get to work on time. He could spend what was left of the summer fishing if he wanted to, and he could go out with his friends and have fun like they had done back in high school when everything was simpler. That all sounded like a great idea, but it didn’t exactly play out that way. Kade felt so strung out, so all over the place, that he didn’t do any of that. His days consisted of waking up late, and sitting around the house. Sometimes he would venture to the Trent house to see his sisters. Sometimes, he drove into town. Other days, he went to the hospital for quick visits to his newborn daughter, Ava. Most days, though, Kade felt restless, and bored out of his skull. He had once attempted to fix that by making a visit to his son, Evan, but had avoided that situation after the argument that had ensued with Shaye.
-----By now, Kade’s actions were no secret. He had been cheating on Jocelyn with Shaye, and he had been caught with her at his and Jocelyn’s home. Jocelyn had wrecked her car that night after discovering them, and that had caused Ava to be born prematurely. That, among other things that Kade definitely blamed himself for. Then, it had somehow surfaced that Kade had been dealing with the oldest Orsino brother, Brandon, and had gotten himself hooked on drugs. When Shaye had found out, she had completely shut Kade out, telling him that they were over and that she wanted nothing more to do with him. In the end, Kade had ended up alone and to his own devices. He had started drinking heavily in the evenings like he used to frequently do, and kept on buying from Brandon regardless of what anyone had to tell him about how stupid he was being. He used, he drank, he still smoked, and he had started picking back up on his player ways. He had become much more mild than he had been once upon a time after Shaye’s first arrival in Grace, only splurging here and there. Then his main woman had been Jocelyn, and he had done well in a relationship with her right up until he had fallen for Shaye again. Right now, though, he was over it all. Relationships weren’t worth the ache that came with them, and he was back in that old mindset of his that it was really just a lie, anyway. Someone always got hurt in the end, and it wasn’t worth the wasted time in between. Why be with just one girl when he could have his pick of many, and once he got tired of her move onto someone else? That was who Kade had been for a very long time, and that lifestyle had never landed him in the kind of shit that he was in now. Resorting back to it seemed like a natural thing to do. And, even if it hadn’t seemed that way, Kade probably would have done it anyway. That was just where he was right now. Not a pleasant place, but after all the shit that he had been through, it was hard to be in a place that was much better. Maybe if he were stronger he could do it, but he didn’t really give a fuck anymore.
-----His behavior recently reflected that attitude exactly. People whispered and groaned, thinking that that version of Kade was long gone only to have him back again, causing trouble. They whispered about what kind of a piss poor father he was going to be, and about how his own father had made mistakes, but had done better than Kade would ever do. He ignored them all, giving them a big Fuck You and did what he wanted to do. He had been through enough that he had at least earned the right to do that much, hadn’t he? Granted, things were starting to look better. Jared was awake from his coma and able to come home. He and Mackenzie were doing so much better, possibly renewing their vows soon. Anna was coming along nicely, dealing with Hunter’s death like the rest of them and becoming excited for the birth of their child. Ava was doing well, and the doctors were going to release her from the hospital soon. Brit and Jacen were getting married. After everything, things seemed to be settling once again, and Kade still couldn’t find it in him to see himself in that brighter place. He was stuck, spinning his wheels, but a part of him didn’t care and was done trying to be there for everyone else. He was fine where he was. Even if he did spend days bored out of mind, waiting for the evening to come so that he could go out and fuck around some more with his life and others’ with his destructive ways.
-----However, today he had a reason to venture out in the day, getting him away from the cabin for a bit. He was running low on just about everything. Food. Drinks. Razors. Laundry detergent. Dog food. A trip to Talon’s was needed, so he loaded into his truck and drove into town. The store wasn’t too busy, and Kade was able to park close to the entrance. Upon going in, he ran into a few older people that he knew, and felt their eyes linger on the cast that he wore on his right arm. It was the only thing he had to show for his involvement in the mine explosion, which he thought was much better than a headstone, and didn’t get why people regarded it so odd. For Christ’s sake, it was just a fractured arm in a cast. Not like it was special. As he moved away from the people he knew that as soon as he turned a corner, they would be whispering again. Kade rolled his eyes, annoyed with them. He turned down the first aisle that he came to, not really caring what it. It happened to be pet supplies, and he was at the end with the collars and tick medications and shampoos. The food was at the opposite end, and he walked that way. He thought that he probably should have gotten a damn cart. He needed a lot, and he got the fifty pound bag of dog food to feed his giant canine friend at home. Kade sighed, now annoyed with himself and his lack of thinking to get a damn cart. And how the hell was he going to get this large, heavy bag of food with a bum arm, anyway? He really hadn’t thought this one through, and just as he was about to turn back to get a cart and consider asking Talon for help with the dog food, his hazel eyes caught sight of a familiar face at the end of the aisle. Oh, what the hell. The dog food could wait. Kade approached Samantha Rose, one of the few people left in town that he could call friend anymore.
-----She was standing there, looking over the food that was meant for hamsters, gerbils and other small rodent like pets. ”Hey,” he offered, his eyes wondering to the food, then back to her with understanding. ”How’s the squirrel?” Kade and Sam had been friends for a while. Maybe not super close friends, but enough to be able to talk and actually tolerate one another. He had offered to assist her one night, as she needed to break into her car that had locked with the keys inside. Kade had thought that the car had been sitting in town somewhere, but the real story went that she had actually driven out to the county line in pursuit of an injured squirrel. Kade had still helped her with her car, and afterward had met the squirrel that Sam had been so persistent in helping. Then, she had planned on releasing him back into the wild once he was better, but he had learned later on that she was now keeping him as a pet. Kade really didn’t care what she did with the damn thing, one way or another. He just found the whole thing kind of amusing, that showing in the small grin that came to his lips as he asked about it.
[ samantha rose. sorry this sucks out loud! next one will be better, promise! ]

_________ samantha rose Samantha had succeeded in turning herself into somewhat of a hermit. Day in and day out, she avoided public appearance and stuck close to home, the farthest that she’d dare to going being for a walk down the county road. Hiding was pretty lame in anyone’s perspective, but with the way things had been going lately, it seemed safer to not even deal with anyone else in town. Bad things just kept happening, one after the other. Samantha herself wasn’t directly involved in any of these happenings, and hoped to stay that way. Her only contribution to the mayhem was simply returning to Grace, causing somewhat of an uproar, due to her track record with some of Grace’s most valued residents. She hadn’t realized she would be as unwelcome as she was, but made the best of it. People could say what they wanted to. No one would ever really know what happened to her, where she went, or why she did what she did. Sam knew, and for the moment, that was good enough for her. Life had slowed to a pretty normal pace for the girl, and truthfully things were also pretty boring. Samantha didn’t want to be a part of the major turmoil going on in the town and she hadn’t instigated anything to be a part of it. The only semi-exciting thing that had happened was the fact that she was “dating” Brandon Orsino. Sam was a little leery about being with Brandon, only because she knew his reputation and wasn’t sure if he was really all that serious about her. But she had figured what the hell, and decided to give him a shot. Needless to say, that didn’t exactly help her reputation any. But at this point, it didn’t really matter. The good thing was, so many other things were happening for people to talk about, that most everyone had forgotten that Sam had even come to town. It was a nice little break, and Sam enjoyed being able to go into public without having some assholes whisper crap about her. She’d learn to not give any reaction to it, but thankfully, it was a rare occurrence anymore. Most people seemed to be getting used to the idea of her being back in town.
The mine explosion was something that Samantha really didn’t know how to react to. In her mind, others probably thought she had no reason to be worried or freaked out by the fact that Jacen Ward was one of those trapped deep within the mine. And at first, she’d made herself believe that too. But the fact of the matter was that, he was the father of her child. If he weren’t to make it out of the mine alive, what would happen then? Most likely, his family would gain custody of her, and there’d be no chance of her ever getting to know Hadley. That of course, was only one of the concerns. There were three other people down there that she knew well, and each one she was truly worried about. But there really wasn’t all that much she could do. The best thing Sam could think of to do was stay out of the way. That’s probably where she belonged, anyways. So, as the scenes unfolded and the news showed people being hauled out of the mine, Sam simply watched without putting too much thought into it. All she kept telling herself was that everything was okay now, and there was still no need to worry about it. Due to her lack of outside communication though, she hadn’t bothered to see if any of them were alright, and she was sure that it didn’t really matter. Samantha had become accustomed to living her life on her own, and didn’t feel the need to reach out to other people at all. Later, she’d found out Kade and Jacen were alright. Jared had been in a coma for quite some time, and had just recently come out of it. At least some things were turning around. Samantha also heard a few of the other things floating around, some she was unsure of, some she didn’t really care for. That was all she’d really done. Sit around and hear about what everyone else’s lives consisted of. Considering she didn’t really have much of one anymore. It was a depressing thought, but none the less true.
Today, Sam was determined to at least get out of her house and into public. She felt like an anti-social vampire, and was starting to go stir crazy from sitting inside for so long. Sam need to go to Talon’s anyway, due to the fact that she didn’t have anything to feed to her little pet squirrel that she had acquired a couple weeks ago. So, slipping on a pair of flip flops, and grabbing her wallet, she head out the door walking toward Talon’s. It was a nice day, and was thankful for it, considering she could walk rather than drive the possessed car that she’d opted to by a few weeks ago also. Not that she really ever needed it to go anywhere. Arriving at Talon’s, Samantha was relieved to see that there was really no one there. She walked in without a second thought to the few weird stares she received, and headed over to the pet supplies aisle. Standing in front of the array of foods for small animals, she wrinkled her nose, unsure of what to even get. All the items were for gerbils or guinea pigs. Squirrels weren’t in the same family, were they? Frustrated, she stood there, looking it over again. Surely, she couldn’t be the only person in Grace who had decided to keep a squirrel as a pet. They lived in a small country town for Christ sake; some other lonely bastard had to own one too. Deep in her aggravated thought, Samantha hadn’t even realized that Kade had been making his way over to her down the aisle, let alone that he was even in the same aisle. It wasn’t until he’d made his presence known that she was even at all aware. “Hey, how’s the squirrel?” Samantha couldn’t help but smile at it, knowing he thought the whole thing was ridiculous. Kade had been the one to take her back to her car that had locked itself out on the county line. The story was a little weird to some, but Samantha could’ve cared less. The squirrel, which she now calls her pet, was injured and Sam made a point to go after it to help it. Her car, being the piece of shit it is, locked itself with her keys and everything else inside of it. So, that night, Sam had walked home with nothing but a squirrel. She hadn’t originally intended to keep it, rather she was going to release it back into the woods when it got better. Sam found that she enjoyed the company, and it gave her something to do.
“Hungry,” Samantha sighed out, turning away from the gerbil food and toward him. Samantha had known Kade for awhile, and to be honest, was always kind of surprised that he still chose to talk to her after her whole ordeal with Jacen last year. Kade and Jacen were best friends, and typically anyone that was close to Jacen, had eliminated Sam from their mind and vocabulary completely. But for whatever reason, Kade hadn’t. “He chewed up a whole section of my carpet. But apparently, there’s no such thing as squirrel food.” The look on his face said what she already knew. He thought this entire thing was hilarious. From the get go, he didn’t really get why she’d taken in the squirrel in the first place, but to her it seemed pretty simple. Bored, loneliness, lack of constructiveness- Brandon was hardly around and she never went out to see the light of day anyways. It must’ve seemed really pathetic to house, of all things, a squirrel. Sam didn’t necessarily give a damn though. She ignored his mocking grin, and instead, returned his question with hers. “And what brings you here today?” Sam knew, as everyone else did, about all of the stuff Kade had been involved in lately. She empathized, knowing how some people chose to take sides and twist the story whatever way they could to make it shine in their favor. With her track record though, Sam didn’t judge. She didn’t know the story or what had all really happened, and figured it wasn’t something he really cared to talk about anyway; which was fine with her. Serious conversations always tended to be awkward from her angle. “Well, I’m glad you’re here. Now everyone can stare at you, instead of me.” She smiled with a small lift of her shoulders, crossing her arms against her chest. “And you’re also being pretty risky. Talking to me in public? You could be blacklisted for that kind of stuff.” Samantha was a constant joker, even if it had to do with herself. That was typically the way she dealt with things that were supposed to be upsetting and dark. Living in sadness was never Sam’s way of doing things, even when times were really bad. Those were one of her good qualities that had always struck people as the most odd. Then again, there were a lot of things that could be marked as odd about Samantha Rose.

kade trent. the darkest hour never comes in the night. ___________________________________
-----He didn’t even remember how it was that he and Sam had come to know each other. In a small town like Grace, it was just taken for granted, this meeting of people. You met at a young age, and grew up together whether you liked it or not. Kade had known Samantha for a long time, but had only really gotten to know her as a friend or whatever it was that they were when she had started dating one of his best friends, Jacen Ward. Jacen was just like another brother in the Trent family, often staying over at the house, and having had his own chair at their table. It was through Jacen’s relationship with Sam that Kade got to know the older girl, and found that she was actually enjoyable company to have. Which, that was saying something, because Kade could tolerate a lot of people when he was out and about, seeming as though he were easily befriended when the reality was that he sometimes really hated people that thought they were best friends. They were just too ignorant to notice how much he loathed their very existence in his life. When Samantha and Jacen had parted ways, they had all somehow been able to stay friends. That usually doesn’t happen, but again, in a small town like Grace, a lot of people were friends with pretty well everyone and it was really hard to pick sides in close knit groups. However, Kade’s opinion of Sam had changed when she had up and left her daughter behind, seeming to want absolutely nothing to do with her and leaving the responsibility of a child solely to Jacen. Jace was a good guy, mature, and strong willed. Kade had no doubt that his friend was going to be able to handle raising his daughter just fine, but it was just the idea that Sam had left and hadn’t looked back that had bothered Kade. He had tried to stay out of it, though, knowing that what Sam did wasn’t his business.
-----When Samantha had come back to Grace, a lot of people whispered and talked. The locals were all on Jacen’s side, thinking Sam to be an awful, heartless bitch for leaving her child behind and that she had some nerve to show her face here again after pulling a stunt like that. Kade knew that her arrival back in town had torn Jacen, leaving him angry and confused about the situation all over again. Kade personally thought that coming back to a town where she knew she was going to have to take a lot of shit over what she had done had taken a lot of courage and reason to do, and his opinion of Sam was restored. Not that his opinion probably managed much, but that was the reason why he still chose to associate with the girl while the rest of the Jacen-loyal still shunned her. That, and it wasn’t like Kade himself was perfect. He considered himself a fuck up on a daily basis, knowing how easy it was to make the wrong decision, or to let other things get in the way of what you really wanted to do. He could easily understand making a mistake, and knew what it was like to mess up just once and having people stick it to you no matter what you tried to do to redeem yourself. How could he not still talk to Sam? She had done nothing worse than any of the shit that he had done recently. Kade was still her friend, proving that much when he had drove out to the middle of nowhere to help her get her piece of shit car unlocked. She probably wondered why, but Kade didn’t see why he should take the time to explain it. Either she got it, or she didn’t. Right then, though, he chose to pick on her about this squirrel that had caused her car to end up in the middle of nowhere. He saw her smile at the mention of it, and thought that there was at least one person he wasn’t presently pissing off. That was a nice change.
-----She told him that the squirrel was hungry, but he had already concluded that much with her standing here and trying to find something to feed the thing. “He chewed up a whole section of my carpet. But, apparently, there’s no such thing as squirrel food.” ”Really? he asked, feigning surprise. ”You don’t think that’s because they’re wild animals and people don’t keep them as pets, do you?” Now he was being a smartass, but that was how Kade always was. ”Just get it some bird seed or something.” As squirrels are infamous for eating out of bird feeders, this made sense. Squirrels were vegetarians; any kind of fruit or seed would work. Silly Samantha. “And what brings you here today?” ”Oh, you know. I got to looking around and realized that I didn’t have a damn thing. Figured it was about time to come grocery shopping. Cooper’s looking awful thin.” The part about Cooper was a joke, as the massive dog looked anything but thin. And, if he got hungry enough, Kade kind of hoped that the wolf part would kick in and Cooper could fend for himself. But, knowing the dog, as goofy as he was, he’d just lay on Kade’s front porch and starve. “Well, I’m glad you’re here. Now everyone can stare at you instead of me.” Nice. Real nice. It was probably the truth, though. Sam was getting to be old news in Grace, while Kade just kept things rolling and gave them all something new to talk about on a regular basis. “And you’re also being pretty risky.” Kade raised a brow at this. Risky? “Talking to me in public? You could be blacklisted for that kind of stuff.” Oh, now it made sense. Kade had to grin. Where other people might have been serious about something like that, Samantha was joking. She wasn’t acting as though she had to walk on eggshells around him, and that was very welcome. ”Are you kidding? After everything I’ve done lately, talking to you in public might actually improve my status.” Sadly enough, that could be true.
-----Kade had been doing a lot of things lately that he wasn’t particularly proud of, but that didn’t mean that he planned on stopping any time soon. ”But, if we wanted to give them something really good to talk about, we could, sweetheart. Just say the word.” He said this with a wicked grin, one of those almost perfect ones of his that had charmed quite a few girls before. So maybe propositioning her in the middle of the pet care aisle of Talon’s was a little off, but it wasn’t like Kade was actually expecting her to take him up on that kind of offer. Somewhere in his mind it registered that she was currently dating Brandon Orsino, or doing whatever it was with him that was as close to dating as a girl got. Kade knew Sam fairly well, and he didn’t see her jumping on the chance to jump him when she had another man. Besides, he was just playing around, being his typical Kade self. She would get that.
